
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visits Kyiv’s St. Sophia Cathedral and discusses the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage with Olena Zelenska
During a working visit to Ukraine, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay met with representatives of Ukrainian cultural institutions to discuss various issues related to the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage. One of the topics discussed was the statement that the historical center of Chernihiv should be another UNESCO gem. Ukrainian cultural institutions noted the significant work they are doing to preserve and develop the national cultural heritage. The meeting also discussed the restoration and preservation of historical architecture in Ukraine, including in Kyiv and Chernihiv, and UNESCO’s readiness to support Ukraine in these projects.

Today, during her working visit to Ukraine, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, visited the Kiev Sophia Cathedral, where she met with the First Lady Olena Zelenska, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhepparova, and Director-General of the National Reserve “Sophia of Kyiv”, which includes the Andriivska Church Museum, Nelya Kukovalska.
Various issues related to cultural projects and initiatives in Ukraine were discussed during the meeting. One of them was the statement that the historic center of Chernihiv should be another UNESCO gem. This became possible thanks to the huge work that Ukraine is doing to preserve and promote its cultural heritage.
The meeting with the Director-General of UNESCO was also an opportunity to thank her for all the assistance provided to cultural institutions in Ukraine. This assistance was important because it allowed for the preservation and promotion of Ukraine’s national cultural heritage, which is important for preserving the identity and cultural heritage of Ukraine.
Ukraine has countless cultural treasures that deserve protection and promotion, and the inclusion of the historic center of Chernihiv on the UNESCO list will be another step towards achieving these goals.
